I love winter fruit – oranges, grapefruit, little clementines. They’re juicy and sweet and just what you need while you’re fighting your winter cold or trying to eat healthy after the holidays. By broiling the grapefruit you start to break down the sugars and they get even sweeter. The added flavor of the allspice is delicious.
I think grapefruit is complicated to eat and a bit discouraging. You have to get the fancy knife or serrated spoon out and even then its difficult to get to all of the fruit’s flesh. However, after broiling with the skin removed, the segments easily pull apart and are very easy to eat with just a fork. This broiled grapefruit recipe can serve as a great accompaniment to a strata for brunch or a warm afternoon snack for kids on a cold day.
2 pink grapefruit
2 tablespoons honey
pinch of allspice
Cut the skin away from the grapefruit, remove any remaining pilth, and cut each grapefruit into quarters. Place the quarters in a heatproof shallow dish. Mix together honey and allspice and spoon over the grapefruit. Cook under the broiler for 5 minutes.
